Our history is part of the story of the roofers of Septfontaines, the “Simmer Leendecker”. Skills are passed down, techniques evolve and the love of the craft endures.
After the First World War, Jean GOERENS helped rebuild Luxembourg and France.
After the Second World War, his son Marcel GOERENS also took part in reconstruction work.
Today, six generations of expertise support your projects.

The cockerel on Itzig’s bell tower
An article in Tageblatt dated 19 July 1950 describes the removal of the cockerel from Itzig’s bell tower for repairs and painting. Joseph STIEFER, a journeyman at the Marcel GOERENS roofing company in Gasperich, is named in the account.

1918 — Johann GOERENS’ travel permit
Issued in Differdange on 6 August 1918, this document authorises Johann GOERENS, born in 1858, to travel to Deutsch-Redingen for work. His occupation is recorded as “Schieferdecker”: slate roofer.

1928 — Jean GOERENS’ driving licence
This driving licence, issued on 30 June 1928, bears the signature “Jean Goerens, maître-couvreur” — master roofer. A tangible record of our family’s trade.
1893
1893 — A birth record, and already a trade
The birth record of Jean GOERENS, born in 1893, names his father Johann and records his occupation as roofer.
1946
1946 — Marcel GOERENS’ artisan card
Issued on 1 August 1946, this card from the Chambre des Artisans records Marcel GOERENS’ trade as roofer. It also reflects the place of apprentice training in the craft trades.

Ralph GOERENS’ membership card for the Chambre des Métiers connects the current generation with the trades of timber framing, roofing and sheet metalwork.
From Septfontaines to today’s building sites
Toitures GOERENS is one of Luxembourg’s oldest family businesses. Its history is closely linked to the roofing trade and to the village of Septfontaines (Simmern), in the canton of Capellen.
By the early 19th century, the village was already known for its roofers. The expression “Simmer Leendecker” was a familiar part of everyday language in Luxembourg.
With too little farmland to support all the villagers, many turned to skilled trades. Roofers travelled throughout the country and beyond its borders to practise their craft. Many raised their families in Septfontaines, passing their knowledge and experience from father to son.
An old village song captured the demands of the trade. Its message was simple: laying a slate roof is no child’s play, and even driving a nail takes skill.
After the First World War, many roofers chose other occupations. The GOERENS family remained committed to its craft. Jean GOERENS took part in reconstruction work in Luxembourg and France, carrying on the work of the generations before him.
After the Second World War, Marcel GOERENS also took part in reconstruction work.
Today, this tradition lives on at Toitures GOERENS — a craft that connects generations.
The cockerel on Itzig’s bell tower
Lowered for repairs and repainting, the bell tower’s cockerel was shown to schoolchildren and taken around the village. The article names Joseph STIEFER, a journeyman at the Marcel GOERENS company in Gasperich. Repainted in gold and decorated with a ribbon in the national colours, the cockerel was then returned to its place, twenty-four metres above the ground. The text notes that it had indicated the weather since 1895.
